How Much Does a Shopify Developer Cost? A Plain 2026 Guide

A Shopify developer can cost anything from about $15 an hour to well over $100 an hour, depending on experience, location and how complex the work is. Upwork’s own cost guide puts the median at around $20 an hour, while UK contract roles that mention Shopify have a median day rate of £488. For a full store build, most people are better off with a fixed price agreed in writing before any work starts.

I have been building for the web for over 15 years and have delivered more than 350 projects, most of them for clients in the US, UK, UAE and Australia. This is the guide I wish more store owners read before they started asking for quotes.

Should you pay hourly or a fixed price?

Both models are fair. They just suit different jobs.

Hourly works well when the scope is small or unclear: fixing a broken cart, adjusting a section, tidying up apps, or ongoing tweaks each month. You pay for the time used, and you can stop when you like. The risk is that the total is open-ended.

Fixed price works well when you know what you want: a new store, a theme rebuild, a migration, or a set of custom features. You know the total before you commit, and the developer carries the risk of underestimating. The trade-off is that changes outside the agreed scope need a new quote.

Hourly Fixed price
Best for Small fixes, ongoing support, unclear scope New builds, redesigns, migrations
Budget certainty Low High
Who carries estimate risk You The developer
Handling changes Easy, you just pay for more hours Needs a change request and new quote
What to watch Hours creeping up A vague scope that hides gaps

For most store builds I work on a fixed written quote with milestone payments, so you pay in stages as each part is delivered rather than everything up front.

What do published Shopify developer rates look like?

There is no single official rate, but a few sources publish useful ranges. These are the ones I could check directly.

Source What it says
Upwork’s Shopify developer cost guide Median around $20 an hour, with most rates between $15 and $29. Beginner around $15, intermediate around $33, expert around $95.
Arc’s Shopify hiring page Shopify developer rates “can start at $65 per hour”, and store setup can range from $500 to over $25,000 depending on customisation.
IT Jobs Watch (UK contracts, six months to 1 October 2026) Median day rate of £488 for contracts that mention Shopify, with the 10th percentile at £256 and the 90th at £526.
Shopify’s own guide to hiring an expert Help through its Partners directory starts at $50 per project and goes to more than $5,000 for higher-end specialists. It gives around $5,000 as an example for a custom, fully branded store redesign.
US Bureau of Labor Statistics Median pay for web developers and digital designers was $47.85 an hour in May 2025. This is for employees, not freelancers, but it is a useful benchmark for US labour costs.

A few things to keep in mind when reading these numbers. Upwork’s figures cover freelancers at every level and in every country, so the median is a blend, not a target. Arc’s starting rate sits well above Upwork’s median. UK contract rates usually describe longer engagements inside a company, not a one-off store build.

What actually drives the cost of a Shopify project?

The hourly rate is only half the story. The other half is how many hours the job really needs. These are the things that move the total most:

  • Theme or custom design. Setting up and styling an existing theme takes far less time than building a custom theme from a designer’s files.
  • Number of page templates. A home page, product page and collection page is one thing. Adding landing pages, a lookbook, a store locator and a custom blog layout is another.
  • Product data and migration. Moving products, customers and orders from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform needs mapping, cleaning and checking.
  • Apps and integrations. Connecting stock systems, ERPs, subscriptions, reviews or shipping tools adds testing time, and sometimes custom code where an app does not quite fit.
  • Custom functionality. Product builders, bundle logic, B2B pricing and custom checkout extensions are where costs grow fastest.
  • Speed and SEO work. Optimising images, trimming app scripts and setting up redirects properly takes time, but it protects your search traffic.
  • Experience. A more experienced developer often costs more per hour but needs fewer hours and leaves less to fix later.

Why are Shopify developers in India cheaper than in the UK or US?

Mostly it comes down to cost of living and the cost of running a business. A developer in Kerala, where I am based, does not have London or New York rent and overheads to cover, so the same hour of work can be priced lower.

That does not mean the work is lower quality, or that every developer in India is a bargain. What matters is the same everywhere:

  • Can they show live stores they have built?
  • Do they write clearly and reply on time?
  • Do they give you a written scope and a fixed price, or just a number?
  • Will you own the code and the accounts at the end?

Time zones are worth asking about too. Agree up front when calls happen and how quickly messages get a reply.

If you are comparing a UK contractor at a day rate with an offshore freelancer at an hourly rate, compare the total quote for the same written scope. That is the only fair comparison.

How long does a typical Shopify build take?

It depends on scope, but as a rough guide a theme-based store with a standard set of pages takes me around [PH-TYPICAL-BUILD-TIME], and a custom design with integrations takes around [PH-CUSTOM-BUILD-TIME]. Your content being ready is the biggest factor you control.

How do you get a fixed quote for a Shopify project?

A good quote starts with a clear brief. Before you contact anyone, write down:

  1. What the store must do. Products, variants, subscriptions, wholesale, regions and currencies.
  2. Examples you like. Two or three stores, and what you like about each.
  3. Your apps and systems. Anything the store has to connect to, such as stock, shipping or accounting.
  4. What already exists. A current store, a design file, brand guidelines, product data.
  5. Your deadline and budget range. Even a rough range helps a developer suggest the right approach.

This is how I handle it:

  • We have a 15-minute call to go through your brief.
  • I send a fixed written quote within two business days, with the scope listed clearly.
  • Payment is split into milestones, so you pay as work is delivered.
  • You own all the code and accounts. The store, theme, apps and domain are in your name from the start.
  • After launch you get one month of free support for any issues that come up.

As a rough idea, my store builds usually fall in the range of [PH-TYPICAL-SHOPIFY-PROJECT-PRICE-RANGE], but the written quote is what counts.

What should a Shopify quote include?

Whoever you hire, check that the quote lists the pages and templates, the apps to be set up, any data migration, the number of revision rounds, who owns the store and code, what support you get after launch, and the payment schedule. If any of these are missing, ask. A vague quote is usually where surprise costs come from.
